Diet Myths-Debunked

Posted in food with tags , on January 31, 2008 by erin

I am a sucker for any article/information regarding Nutrition. It’s what I majored in in college, it’s one of my passions. And although I haven’t used my schooling (much to my disappointment and not for lack of trying) in the “real world” I devour any information I can get my hands on. I happened upon a great article about popular diet myths and why they are in fact myths. Now it’s been a long time since college and I have found I get wrapped up in the whirlwind of “fad diet myths” but as I was reading this article it was like I was back in nutrition class sitting in the second row (it was a small class-there were only two rows so I’m not a brown noser!) looking at the overhead (an overhead projector-do you remember those things?-geeze I’m old). So anyway, I’m sitting there once again in my running outfit with my timbuk2 commuter bag and my Starbucks travel mug filled to the brim with delicious black coffee and learning all about nutrition. Ahh, the memories.

Reading this article reinforced what I learned so long ago and made me realize again why I love nutrition so. The article I found is in the February issue of Real Simple and the diets myths are these:

  1. Don’t eat afer 8pm
  2. Eating small, frequent meals boosts your metabolism
  3. Pasta makes you fat
  4. Coffee can help you lose weight
  5. Milk can help you lose weight
  6. Going on a diet is the best way to lose weight
  7. Eating protein and carbs at different meals will help you lose weight
  8. To lose weight, you need to cut calories drastically
  9. Diet foods help you diet
  10. Eating makes you fat.

Maybe you already knew this, maybe not. If you don’t already have this copy of Real Simple and are dying to know why these are myths leave me a comment and I will get back to you, or you can pick up your very own copy for $4.00 or something at just about any store. I feel healthier just reading this and it’s reiterates my motto “everything in moderation”. Except maybe chocolate. 🙂
Happy Eating!

Spring is that you?

Posted in Running, winter with tags , on January 29, 2008 by erin

Yesterday, I was finally able to get out on a run (jog). It was 50 degrees. Didn’t need the ever present hat-mittens-three-wind-proof-layers-scarf-boot-warmers, ect. So nice so warm. In fact Sunday the temp was 64 degrees! I smell spring in the air. And yet today, it’s freezing my tootsies off outside with the added bonus of bone-chillin’ winds. Oh, Spring when will you come?

meme oh meme oh meme here I come.

So I’ve been tagged for a meme, after all it’s all about meme. Hee hee. This tag came from my very stylish friend Melissa:

How long have you been blogging?
I recently started this blog, just in November so I am a newbie and naive about how the whole blogging thing works, but I’m learing. It’s been fun but I need an adult to limit my time online. I get so wrapped up in others great stories or trying to type out something myself and the next thing I know it’s time to make dinner and I’m still in my pj’s.

What inspired you to start your blog, and who are your mentors?
Melissa actually inspired me. Funny thing as I was checking my gmail I noticed in the side bar that I could read a blog about a fashionable mommy of two so I thought I would check her out. I was hooked from the first sentence.
I really want to give my blog a cool unique layout but I don’t want to spend a fortune on one. I found a website where on occasion they are giving away free things you can put on your blog so maybe soon my blog will have a little pizazz.
Mentors, hmmmm in the blogging community I would have to say each blog I read gives me inspiration in their own way. Everyone is so creative, great writers and making it through life with style and humor. I can only aspire to be as good as these others blogs. Most of the blogs I read are written by moms so of course I can totally relate. I did happen upon a dad’s blog and oh, does he have quite the following. I have to say he’s pretty great.

Are you trying to make money on-line, or are you just doing it for fun?
So far just for fun. It’s a great record of my kiddos life. Something she can look back and read and say, “wow my mom is a wacko oh and I got my first tooth in January of 2008.” I don’t know how advertising works but hey if the opportunity arose, I wouldn’t turn it down. I hear of people making 6 figures to blog. What? 6 FIGURES, are you kidding me?

What 3 things do you love about being on-line?
1) being able to reach others without leaving my house
2) shop, shop, shop
3)looking up things when P is sick or is teething or in some developmental stage that I know nothing about or not sleeping or needs something super cute!

What 3 things do you struggle with on-line?
1) spending far too much time, it’s an addiction-instant gratification-
2) my blog and flickr don’t seem to get along
3) HTML-I don’t know a thing

So that’s the story, most of the other blogs I’ve read have already done this particular meme so I won’t be tagging anyone else today. I better get out there and make some more blogging friends.

Listos Part Tre

Posted in Weekly Listos with tags on January 28, 2008 by erin

Weeks Highlight: #1 Visiting my little bro and his wife (and their crazy golden doodle puppy-who LOVED P) for the first time since they were married-they have a great house just an hour north so it’s an easy trip.
#2 my kiddo slept until 7am!-that’s a record for her-her usual wake up time is 5am and I’ve done everything the “experts” recommend but she still greets the day nice and early, ugggg!

Weeks Countdown: a trip to the beautiful Colorado mountains and taking P on her first snowshoe trip.

Weeks Annoyances: booking places to stay in Europe, what a hassle. When I find a place and everything looks like a go, the place is rented out from under me. What’s up with those Europeans?

Weeks Bummer: my poor pooch is sick-not like as in he only has 6 months to live sick, just a doggie cold.

Weeks Realization: I want to move to a smaller town-more on this in another post.

Weeks Coolest finding: The lead singer for OneRepublic was at my brother’s wedding!

Dwell Baby

Posted in baby products, modern design, Target with tags , on January 26, 2008 by erin
Here’s a photo of the curtains I picked up at Target from Dwell Studio.
I didn’t see them on the website which is a bummer because I wanted to get a matching bed skirt without having to purchase the entire crib set.

I also had to pick up the matching night light for a whopping 3$.

Say it isn’t so!

Dwell at Target? I was just at Target-er, I mean Targhetto, today (surprise, surprise) and found the cutest stuff from dwell studio. It’s chic, it’s modern but without the modern price tag. Why does modern mean spendy? Don’t “they” know us po‘ folks need cool things too? I like the modern look, not to the extreme like my husband who would build us a house out of steel, concrete and glass. I like a little warmth to my straight lines no-frills approach. And I think dwell studio is perfect mix of modern and trendy but with warmth and softness. I so wanted to get P a crib set from this collection but it was a liiitttle out of my price range soooo I went with a lesser model.
As I was perusing the aisles of Target and taking my sweet time (P was at home with Daddy, why should I hurry??) I thought I would check out the baby section because I’m sure Pear really needs more baby crap. But she does need curtains (we are currently using towels and trust me it doesn’t look as good as it sounds) so I jaunted over to baby-ville and found the perfect little curtains from dwell studio. Hooray! I hung them up tonight and they look so great in her room! Hurry to your local Target before it’s all gone. Trust me you’re gonna like it.
